Choose high-quality buildings designed to permanent building standards – for any end use
The Portakabin modular and portable steel-framed buildings we offer meet all the quality standards of permanent buildings. The difference is that Portakabin buildings are manufactured in a factory, which means quality can be controlled very precisely. The buildings are then delivered to site ready for rapid, safe and waste-free installation. If you hire your building, it can be delivered from stock within days, sometimes hours if necessary. If you choose to buy your building, it will be finished up to 50% faster than a traditional construction project.

How much are your design fees?

The cost of our buildings includes all relevant professional fees to carry out the design and construction of your building. We will initially draw up some indicative guidelines on cost, layout, specification and programme. If you wish to go further, by moving towards planning permission without going to contract, a small charge will be made for further work. However, you will only have to pay this if the project does not proceed.

How are Portakabin buildings delivered?

We will make all arrangements for the delivery of your building. Modular and portable buildings are transported by road on a flat-bed lorry or trailer platform and positioned using a lorry-mounted or standard crane. Modular buildings are then mechanically moved into position using lifting eyes.

Could you use our existing sub-contractors?

Yes. However, if you wish to employ your own sub-contractors or suppliers, it is important that they are assessed in the same way as our existing suppliers.

Can you act as main contractor?

Yes - we can offer a full design and build service. We are also happy to work with other contractors, as required.

We are very short of space on our site. Can you build up on the roof or within internal courtyards?

Yes, subject to individual site surveys. We have installed buildings on rooftops using structural steelwork. We can also crane buildings over existing structures and into enclosed courtyards. Multi-storey capability means large buildings can be created on small footprints or small parcels of land.

Do Portakabin buildings comply with Building Regulations?

Yes. Our buildings offer ready-to-use working environments that meet the requirements of The Building Regulations, The Building Standards (Scotland), and other permanent building regulations - including Part M (2004).*

What happens if I have a problem with my building?

You should contact either our Sales and Hire Customer Services team on 01 808 5055, who will provide ongoing support after your building is delivered. They will act quickly to remedy any problems you may have. Remember that all new buildings purchased are covered by a comprehensive warranty package for your complete peace of mind.

How long can I hire a building for?

You can hire Portakabin buildings for any length of time, giving you the flexibility to keep your building for as long as you need it. A member of your local Hire Centre team will be happy to advise you on the options available.

What can you do to enhance the security of my modular or portable building?

A range of optional extras is available to enhance the security of your building and prevent break-ins. These range from steel shutters and window guards to intruder alarm systems.

How do I connect the building to electricity, telephone and data cables?

All Portakabin buildings are fitted with a consumer unit, tested to BS7671. A qualified electrician must connect the consumer unit to a mains supply. We advise you to contact your communications systems provider to arrange connection to computer and telephone systems.

What type of foundations will my Portakabin building require?

This depends on the surface the building will be standing on, and the type of building. Portable buildings that will be located on hard standing will only require shims. For other surfaces, or for modular buildings, only pad foundations are necessary. The foundations required will depend on the site conditions, the building weight and floor loads, so we will always advise you on your individual requirements. Portakabin can take care of all groundworks for your building, if required

What preparations do I need to make before delivery?

You will need to keep access to the site completely clear of obstructions, allowing enough space for the vehicle delivering the building. Suitable foundations or a level hard-standing area must be available to accommodate the building. Portakabin will advise you on these matters during a site inspection.

Do Portakabin buildings need planning permission?

Yes. All modular buildings require planning permission, and that includes all Portakabin buildings. The specialists at Portakabin can take care of all planning permission applications on your behalf, if required.

What is the difference between a 'modular' and a 'portable' building?

A portable building is a stand-alone, self-contained building that is delivered in one piece by road and installed on site ready for immediate use. A modular building is constructed from two or more individual building modules. The modules are delivered to site by road, craned into position and connected together to create buildings of any size, with multiple storeys, to meet individual requirements. Portakabin portable building models include Titan, Solus, Pullman and Pacemaker. Our modular building systems include Ultima, Ultima Vision, Duplex and Classrooms.

What are your buildings made from?

Portakabin buildings are constructed with a steel outer wall, steel roof and galvanised steel floor frame. The walls are injected with foam insulation to give them a high thermal efficiency. This method of construction provides you with a building that requires very little maintenance and offers a high degree of comfort, all year round.
